Indian firms get aggressive about brand infringement

Companies now see it as an infringement on their future potential market value, say experts What´s in a name? A lot, if you are among the country´s better known industrial brands: Ultratech Cement Ltd. One of the flagship firms of the Aditya Birla group, Ultratech has filed three lawsuits since the start of this year alone to prevent misuse of its brands, its rising sun logo and its tagline ´Engineer´s Choice´.

Most recently, Ultratech Cement took Ultratech Solar Technologies Pvt Ltd to court for allegedly selling solar water heaters under the brand name Ultratech International. Two other lawsuits have been filed this year against smaller cement firms. One against Pangli Cement Co. Pvt Ltd for the alleged sale of cement under brand names such as Ultra-HiTech Cement, UltraEiTech and Ultra HI Tuck. Jai Shree Krishna Cement, another small cement company, was sued for alleged infringement of not just the name Ultratech, but also the company´s tagline and logo.
