Tamil Nadu sets a production target of 18.86 mt
Tamil Nadu has set a production target of 18.86 million tonne (mt), and after increasing existing cement production capacity to 17 mt, the government cement will be sold in the open market, which will bring the cement price down, said Thangam Thennarasu, State Industries Minister.
With the establishment of a new cement plant with a 10 million tonne (mt) capacity, the current cement production capacity will be raised to 17 mt, said Thangam Thennarasu.
Salem West MLA R Arul raised the issue when he said that cement producers function as a syndicate and fix costs arbitrarily because of which people are affected.
Arul urged the state to increase the cement production by four times to ensure that sufficient quantities of cement are available in the open market so that the cost of private cement goes down.
The Minister said that the cement price was Rs 420 per bag in January, this financial year, and it increased to Rs 490 in June.
Based on Chief Minister MK Stalin’s orders, a meeting with cement manufacturers was held on June 16, in which the cement manufacturers were ordered to lower the cost. Following the meeting, the cement cost was decreased to Rs 450 per bag, which at present, till August 31, is Rs 420 per bag.
The minister also said that Tamil Nadu has launched a brand Valimai cement and once it enters the open market the cost of cement bags will drop further.
